Morning musings

This post may make you angry, but please read all of it before you respond.

This morning I woke up to hear that a draft memo concerning the Roe vs. Wade deliberations had been leaked.

IF the memo is true...A decision based on false testimony [admitted by the woman who brought the case], poor science [or the lack of accurate science at that time], and an inappropriate interpretation of the constitution will soon be overturned.

Now, what will be the effects of such a ruling?
  • Abortions will continue to be legal in the United States. The only change is that the decision to make abortions legal will be determined state by state. Many states had legalized abortions before Roe vs. Wade passed; many states will probably choose to legalize abortions again.
  • Abortion providers, such as Planned Parenthood, may have to close some of their clinics. The millions and millions of dollars such providers make each year may be impacted [at least until they relocate their clinics]. I suspect such providers will continue to scream a lot and stir up strife because of the inconvenience of having their income stream affected.
  • A new divide will develop between the states based on which states allow abortions and which do not.  This division may resemble the division between so-called blue and red states, but may not be exactly the same. Over time, I suspect the states that do not allow abortion will see stabilization and prosperity within their families that the states allowing abortion will not have.
Now, if the people of a state choose to allow abortions within their state, they have a right to do so. [Yes, as I have written in the past, I believe that abortion is murder; I believe that I do not have the right to kill someone because they are an obstacle or inconvenience in my life. I based this belief on what the Bible says. However, I recognize that many others do not hold to the same values that I do.] The United States provides freedom of religion and that every person has the right to follow their own conscience, as long as it does not interfere with the freedom and rights of others. If the people of a state want to provide abortion on demand, they can do so. I can share why I think they are doing wrong, but their choice is their choice.

There is some inappropriate irony that some people will demand their God-given right, the "pursuit of happiness", to murder their own children. These people do not see how demanding the benefit of God's laws without abiding by those same laws [ie--"to love your neighbor [the unborn child] as yourself"] is not only a contradiction of ideas, it puts a person's soul in danger.

But perhaps the thought that is uppermost in my mind is this: The biggest enemy that we, as citizens of the United States have, is not:
  • Russia
  • China
  • The Republican party
  • The democratic party
  • The American Church
  • Any other religious creed
  • Secret societies
  • The devil or his helpers
No, the main enemy we have is the total, all-compassing selfishness that lives inside of us, that "wants what I want, when I want it, in the way I want it". That selfishness doesn't give a rip for anyone or anything else as long as it is happy and satisfied. That selfishness is too blind to see how wretched we really are and how much we need God to forgive us and deliver us from our self-centered ego.

It is too easy to let our emotions lead us astray.  We have all been sincere about something, only to discover that we were "sincerely wrong". Some once thought making abortions legal would prevent back-alley horrors; instead, the horrors continued to multiply.  This abortion issue has demonstrated that within ourselves, our selfishness blinds our ability to plan well.

Oh, that the people of this country would stop shouting and start thinking! Oh, that the people of God would not just talk about praying but pray!

Another thought: A mentor once told me, "The ungodly do a good job living an ungodly life; will you do a good job living a Godly life as a follower of Jesus?"

In the months to come, whatever the Supreme Court rules, let us as the people of God, dedicate ourselves to obeying Jesus and doing what He has called us to do, to go forth making disciples of all nations, setting the prisoners free, and demonstrating the truth of the Gospel with miracles, signs, and wonders.
